Opici Family Wine & Spirits Distributors – History & Facts

The Opici family has roots in the wine business dating back to 1913, when Joseph and Esther Opici, both Italian immigrants, began importing wine from Italy and distributing it throughout New Jersey. They fell on hard times during the Depression and Prohibition. Still, they found their traction quickly after Prohibition was repealed in 1933 by shipping a railroad car full of California wine to New Jersey worth $1500.

The Opici’s established the American Beverage Distribution Company in New Jersey in 1934. Joseph and Esther’s son Hubert graduated high school in 1934 and joined the company as a delivery boy. Joseph was the salesman, and Esther ran the office for a true family-owned and operated business.

They recognized the opportunities of opening a wine business in California, and Joseph Opici moved and established the first Opici winery in Cucamonga in 1939. Hubert assumed leadership of the New Jersey operations in 1944 as he returned from volunteering in the Armed Forces during WWII.

He married Rose Marie Deregibus in 1944, and she became his partner in life and business; the new Opici husband-wife duo expanded the family business. They purchased the Cazanove Wine Company of New York in 1946, renaming it Cazanove Opici Wine Company. They also moved the family winery to a larger facility in Alta Loma, California, in 1948.

They bought Interwine, Inc in 1993, spreading the business in Connecticut, and in 2012, they established a Washington D.C. operation, and in 2013, they also expanded to Maryland and Delaware. The company grew steadily under Hubert Opici’s leadership, and he earned the recognition “American Wine Legend” in 2014 by Wine Enthusiast Magazine. Hubert Opici celebrated his 100th birthday on 13 March 2016.

Today, the Opici Family Distributing is a renowned and highly respected distributor with an excellent reputation and impressive portfolio. It is run by the fourth generation Opicis and employs over 600 people in several locations. They continue to uphold the long-lasting service, integrity, loyalty, and hard work traditions.
