The History of Martignetti Wine & Spirits Distributor

The Martignetti Companies was established in 1908 as a grocery business; in 1033, with the Repeal of Prohibition, the company was issued the first alcohol retail license in Boston. With this, the official start of the Martignetti Companies as a licensed wholesaler and distributor began.

In 1986, Carmine and Carl Martignetti assumed control of the family business and began spreading the business. They acquired other local distributors like Chas. Gilman & Sons, Pastene Wine Company, Jet Wine & Spirits, and more. In 1993, the company spread to New Hampshire, Maine, and Vermont.

In 1998, the Martignetti Companies opened shop in Rhode Island, creating a 5-state New England Sales Organization. They also opened a new company headquarters in Norwood, with a 325,000 square feet temperature-controlled warehouse.

The company continued acquiring wine and spirits distributors throughout New England to spread its market further. The company also bought Vision Wine & Spirits, a company with import operations in 42 states, and constructed a state-of-the-art LEED-certified Martignetti Companies Headquarters in Taunton, Massachusetts, compiling all offices, sales, and warehouse employees under one location.

The company decided to close the final Martignetti store in 2017, after 84 years in the retail business, focusing solely on distribution services and meeting the demands and needs of their retail, bar, and restaurant customers.

In other New England states, they operate as Martignetti Companies of New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, and Rhode Island Distributing Company through a joint venture.
