L. Knife & Son is the flagship of the Sheehan Family Companies, a family-owned and operated distributor out of Massachusetts. The company has a long history and tradition and a strong outlook for the future.

They import and distribute domestic brews, craft beers, ciders, and mead, and imported brews, wines, spirits, malternatives, and non-alcoholic beverages. L. Knife & Son is still headquartered in Kingston, where they serve the southern part of the state.

L. Knife & Son – Distributor History & Facts

L. Knife & Son was founded in 1898, when Luigi Cortelli immigrated from northern Italy to Plymouth, Massachusetts. He began selling groceries from a pushcart and changed his name to Louis Knife (Cortelli means Knife in English).

Louis Knife started to spread his business, adding animal feed and grains to the business, and later added seasonal items. His business started thriving, and he leveled up, becoming a storefront owner and distributor. In 1934, after the Repeal of Prohibition, Louis’s son, Domero, established a distribution agreement with Anheuser-Busch, becoming a licensed beer distributor.

In 1956, Gerald Sheehan joined the company as a route salesman, and he became Domero’s son-in-law, and later, in 1963, Sheehan succeeded Domero Knife as the president of the company. Gerald Sheehan started to acquire other alcohol distributing companies across Massachusetts, and L. Knife & Son continued to operate under the umbrella of the Sheehan Family Companies.

Today, the seat of L. Knife & Son in Kingston, Massachusetts, is where most of the Sheehan Family Companies offices are headquartered. L. Knife & Son continues to service most of the southeastern part of the state, being a part of significant events like the Martha’s Vineyard Shark Tournament and the Figawi SailBoat Race Weekend.

L. Knife & Son has a long and impressive portfolio of over 100 brands worldwide, with over 2500 products on the list. The company sells wine, domestic and imported beers, craft beer, cider, mead, wines, spirits, malternatives, and non-alcoholic beverages to restaurants, bars, liquor stores, taverns, and other establishments in southeastern Massachusetts.
