The History & Facts About Hosoda Brothers Inc
Hosoda Brothers Inc was founded in 1918, starting as a confectionery store called Shinanoya in Japantown, the Japanese-dominated part of San Francisco. The company was founded by Kenichiro Hosoda and his older son Tokuichi, and in 1919, Kenichiro’s younger son Juro moved to San Francisco from Hiroshima and later joined the family business. Kenichiro moved back to Japan in 1935, and the two Hosoda brothers remained to manage the family business.
During WWII, the Hosoda brothers and their families lived in Topaz, Utah, and they returned to San Francisco in 1947, renewing the family business under the name Hosoda Brothers.
They noted the scarcity and demand for Japanese products, and they began making sen-bei (tea cakes)and yokan (bean jelly), shipping them nationwide, and establishing the business as a manufacturer and distributor. Tokuichi Hosoda retired in 1970, and Juro continued the business with his son Satoru. Satoru Hosoda recognized the need for Japanese products in the US market, and the company became an importer-wholesaler of Japanese products.
Hosoda Brothers Inc. was incorporated in 1977, and they opened a warehouse and an office in Los Angeles in 1978. They opened their Las Vegas warehouse and office in 1997. The company now carries a line of Japanese and has added a line of Hawaiian products, and they have a separate line of sake from different breweries from Japan. They carry sake products from Niigata and Hyogo regions, Japan’s two largest sake-producing regions.
