The History of Central Distributors

Moon Distributing was founded by Harry L. Hastings in Arkansas in 1935 and was first run in a 5600 square feet facility. The Hastings family still holds the original permit issued by the State of Arkansas and is the only distributor with a permit issued in 1935.

The company partnered with Central Distributors, who were once their main competitors. The Hastings family purchased the remainder of Central Distributors in 1974. Today, they function as both Moon Distributing and Central Distributing as they distribute different products for wholesome customer service. They also bought the McKesson Wine & Spirits Wholesale Company and established an extensive presence in the Arkansas market.

Per the USA’s three-tier business model of the alcohol industry, wholesale distributors are necessary. They are tier 2 – those that buy from distillers, breweries, vintners, and importers and sell to licensed retailers. It is a way to ensure a good variety will be provided to the consumers.

Today, Moon and Central Distributors carry over 7,000 active products and are always seeking new products to add to their portfolio and stay on top of consumer trends. Central Distributors continue to grow their business and have become one of the largest wholesale houses in Arkansas. Their complete facility has 11 acres and over 350,000 square feet. The company employs the 4th generation of the Hastings family, the original founders of the company.

It is a statewide distributor with over 450 on-premise accounts, 420 off-premise accounts, and over 3,000 grocery and convenience stores on its client list. Central Distributors have strong community involvement.

They donate to the American Heart Association, the Arkansas Art Center, the Argenta Community Development, Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum, Grape Escapes, Susan G. Komen, Fayetteville Art Council, Walton Arts Center, Catholic High School, Mount St. Mary’s Academy, etc.
