The company now works by providing an exclusive product portfolio to the most discerning clients found anywhere in the world, as they are the authorized distributors of all the products they offer. The company serves most global cruise vessels, cargo ships, and diplomatic corps based in the USA.

Samuel Meisel & Company was founded in the 1930s as a seller of duty-free products to the passengers and crews of the ships calling on the major Ports of Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York, and other ports on the East Coast of the United States.

The company started by selling spirits, wines, and tobacco products, and by the 1950s, it had expanded its product portfolio to include fragrances, cosmetics, and gift items. Carisam-Samuel Meisel opened a high-end boutique in downtown Washington, DC, to expand their customer base to include and better cater to the diplomatic corps. The elegant shop offered some of the finest high-end gifts and accessories.

From serving the diplomatic corps, the company also expanded into the commercial ship supply, added cruise ship supply, and later added exclusive hotels and resorts to the list of clients they serve. In 2001, Carisam became a part of the Motta Internacional, S.A., the first duty-free company established in the Western Hemisphere.

Today, Carisam operates under the umbrella of Motta Internacional, a company with over 2,000 employees, operating out of the Colon Free Zone in the Caribbean Entrance to the Panama Canal. The Colon Zone is the largest Free Zone in the West, with over $30 billion per year in transactions. Motta became the exclusive distributor of Johnnie Walker in 1997, and Carisam now carries it exclusively in their duty-free shops.
