Blue Ridge Beverage Company

History of Blue Ridge Beverage Distribution Co.

Blue Ridge Beverage was founded in 1938 as a beer and soft drinks distributor. The current family, the Archers, bought the company in 1950 when James M. Archer and his wife Regine Archer moved the family to the Roanoke Valley, and they soon widened their product portfolio.

In 1961, Blue Ridge Beverage started distributing wine by acquiring the rights of another Virginia wine distributor. The consolidated companies remained the largest and most diverse wine distributors in Virginia. With the acquisition of the Miller Brewing Company by Philip Morris in 1969, the Blue Ridge Beverage company saw incredible growth, as they were the most trusted and effective distributor of the Miller Brewery products.

In the 1980s, Blue Ridge Beverage acquired two major Miller distributors in Virginia, the Cavalier Beverage Company and the Shenandoah Beverage Company. They later bought their largest competitor in the wine distribution business in the Roanoke Valley, and by 1997, all these companies were consolidated under the Blue Ridge Beverage company name.

The company expanded to Lynchburg and then to Waynesboro. By 2001, the company had four strategically located facilities in Salem, Waynesboro, South Boston, and Lynchburg. Blue Ridge Company also acquired Dod Distributing Co., Inc, a Coors Brewing Company distributor, getting the distributing rights to more beer brands. In 2006, they won the President’s Award, given annually to the top twenty Coors distributors nationally.

In 2005, Blue Ridge Beverage became the Red Bull Energy Drink distributor in 33 Virginia counties and 13 cities; today, Blue Ridge Beverage is the largest non-alcoholic beverage supplier for Red Bull North America.

In 2008, Blue Ridge Beverage bought the Evans Distributing Company and expanded its operations to the southwest division. The company continued expanding and spreading its influence and now operates with 450 employees, servicing over 4200 customers. They are Virginia’s most extensive statewide wine, beer, and non-alcoholic beverage distributors. They operate out of five state-of-the-art distribution centers and have a solid dedication to service, community responsibility, and quality.

The company delivers beers, ciders, wine, and non-alcoholic beverages, but they also have a charitable side. They support charitable and not-for-profit organizations and events with an emphasis on professional and amateur athletic and sporting events. You will also find them involved in wine and beer dinners, outdoor festivals, and cultural events.
