Alcoholic beverages distributor Southern Wine & Spirits of America has opened its new automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS) facility in Union City, California.
The new facility follows the opening of the company’s Southern Supply Center regional distribution center in Tracy, California in 2013.
Developed in partnership with W&H Systems and Westfalia Technologies, the AS/RS facility houses four storage and retrieval machines that refill pallets automatically.
The 334,000ft2 facility with deep pallet storage is capable of storing 24,750 pallets.
Southern Wine & Spirits of America president and CEO Wayne Chaplin said: “We’re always looking for innovative solutions to leverage world-class supply chain capabilities to reduce costs, deliver optimal fulfillments and provide tailored customer service.
“We tore down the existing Atlantic Street structure to invest in the development of this state-of-the-art facility that will not only drive value for our trading partners, but also drive internal operational efficiencies that will allow Southern to remain competitive in this ever-changing and highly competitive wholesale environment.”
The company is currently focused on the development of supply chain solutions that ensure a high-degree of integration for its suppliers and customers.
